Dual-Use Research of Concern

On September 24, 2015 the United States Government Policy for Institutional Oversight of Life Sciences Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) became effective.

In accordance with the Federal Government Policy, all life science research at Virginia Tech will need to be in accordance with the Virginia Tech Dual Use Research of Concern Policy (Research Policy 13050).  The Virginia Tech Dual Use Research of Concern Policy provides guidance for researchers whose work may meet the criteria for DURC.

The Associate Vice President of the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance is the Virginia Tech Institutional Contact for Dual Use Research (ICDUR).

The Institutional Biosafety Committee has been identified as the Institutional Review Entity (IRE) for DURC.

Any researcher with questions regarding the Virginia Tech or Federal Government Policies, or to submit research for review of DURC criteria, can contact the Virginia Tech Institutional Contact for Dual Use Research (ICDUR), Dr. Gary Sherman (gbsherman@vt.edu). You may also contact the Institutional Review Entity Office Administrator (ibc@vt.edu).
