Launch of a VT-Specific Biosafety Training Module

EHS Announces the Launch of a VT-Specific Biosafety Training Module

Virginia Tech – May 2017 - “Biosafety for Research Labs” is a new online training module developed by EHS for use by the Virginia Tech bioresearch community. Until now, lab personnel working on Institutional Biosafety Committee-approved research projects have taken multiple CITI online sessions to fulfill IBC training requirements.  This new, IBC-endorsed, comprehensive online module replaces all CITI sessions on biosafety topics, and will be updated and refreshed on a regular basis by the EHS Biosafety Group.

In response to longstanding requests from lab workers for an online Bloodborne Pathogens training option, the new module also includes a Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) component for those working with human/non-human primate biological materials in the lab, including human cell lines. Those who work with these materials are identified upon registration for the training, and receive a version of the module that includes the required BBP elements for their occupational needs. Those who do not work with these materials receive a version of the module without BBP components.

A number of innovations have been incorporated in the BBP version of this training to address OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requirements, such as an available online chat with a trainer if trainees wish to pose BBP-related questions, and an electronic data capture of Hepatitis B vaccination preferences of trainees.

Like many other EHS laboratory-related online trainings, lab workers in bioresearch must take “Biosafety for Research Labs” every three years.  For lab workers taking the EHS online biosafety module on this three-year cycle but who also must fulfill the BBP annual training requirement for each interim year, a concise online BBP refresher will be provided to meet this need in 2018.  In addition, the option of attending a classroom BBP training session will still be available.

“Biosafety for Research Labs” can be accessed electronically through the EHS training webpage:, and is located within the topic area of Biological Safety.  Registration for the training module requires entry of your VT PID and password.
